About Parea Books

Parea is creating culture through books, community, and storytelling. We publish books so yes, we are a publishing house, but we think of ourselves as a connector of people and ideas. We find authors who have a fresh take on a relevant and important topic, we pair them with highly skilled and complementary illustrators to bring the books to life visually, we bring readers into the editing process to help us land on a manuscript that we feel confident will create the cultural and behavioral shift we’re looking for, and we sell directly to readers through our site. We connect readers who are reading the books at the same time, we bring people together through our Learn | Feel | Escape event series and our Reading Retreats, and we publish interviews with the creative partners who bring Parea to life. We’re a community of creative storytellers and values-driven individuals who believe in the power of words and art to create the kind of world we’re proud to live in.

Our Philosophy

We looked at every single part of the publishing industry and realized there was opportunity everywhere: from the types of authors who get book deals, to the way authors are compensated, to how books are marketed, to how readers discover books, to the underlying business model itself. At the core of it all, we realized that publishing is one of the last remaining massive consumer industries that has no real idea who its customers are. Parea is changing that. We are the first reader-centric publishing company, committed to working with diverse authors, paying them more, selling more of their books, and involving readers in every aspect of the publishing process from acquisition to editorial to marketing and publicity.

Our Philosophy

Our Authors

We like to think of our authors as the most interesting people at a dinner party. They’re the people who teach you something you didn’t know, who inspire you to go home and start a new hobby, who keep you thinking long after your conversation with them is over. We are deeply committed to publishing diverse voices, which is part of the reason why we proactively find our authors. It takes a lot of confidence to believe in yourself enough to write a book about something, and then to pitch it to an agent, and then negotiate a book deal with a massive publishing house. We know that there are many potential authors out there who have incredible ideas and stories but not the confidence in themselves to put everything on paper and pitch these ideas, which is where we come in. For too long, publishing has been dominated by homogeneity. We’re changing that.

Our Community

When you buy a Parea book, you’re joining a group of people who are as obsessed with the written word and storytelling as you are, people who are growth-oriented and insanely curious, people who want to get to know you and talk about books with you. We’ve got a vibrant online community from countries all over the world on Geneva, we bring people together with our Learn | Feel | Escape series, and we host Reading Retreats in Marrakech with the authors of our books. Welcome!

Sustainable Printing at Die Keure in Belgium

Renewable Resources

Currently, 96% of the energy used to print all Parea Books publications comes from renewable energy sources, 30% of which is generated by the solar panels on the roof of our printer. However, we have goals to move to 100% independence from fossil fuels and 50% on-site energy production within the near future.

Limiting Our Impact

Our printer ensures they choose wood with PEFC and FSC labels to be sure that they are working with material from sustainably managed forests. Additionally, they have helped plant a forest for the past three years an commited to planting a new forest every year.

Help from Technology

By investing in modern printing presses and an optimal workflow with advanced colour management, our printers have also managed to reduce paper waste on the presses. All this means less chemicals, ink, gum, and paper used throughout the printing process.
